There are few places in the world that can rival the experience of shore-based whale watching in the Western Cape of South Africa. Every spring, hundreds of whales return to the Southern tip of Africa to calve and mate. From the shores, surrounded by the hum and beauty of the natural wonders of the Cape Floral kingdom, you will be able to enjoy some of the most spectacular and unusual displays of habitat and wildlife. Flowering plants splash their colours across the landscape, the air is filled with sweet aromas and birdsong, while in the ocean nearby, whales breach and play.
Nestled within De Hoop Nature Reserve, the Whale Trail meanders along some of South Africa's most beautiful coastline. The first 2 days of hiking are the most intensive as we begin inland and make our way towards the coast. Once we have reached the Indian Ocean, we will have miles and miles of coast virtually to ourselves. Abundant opportunities to whale-watch will be provided as you become familiar with the plants, birds and other wildlife unique to the area, along with opportunities to drop down and explore the sandy beaches and tidal pools, swim, snorkel or just take time out.
This trip offers a unique African nature experience...a time to stretch the body, release the mind, fall into the rhythms of nature and rejuvenate the spirit.
Averaging between 7 and 15kms per day, this 55 km, 5 day intermediate walking trail will follow a leisurely pace, giving you the time to really enjoy your surroundings. Luggage will be transported daily from one cabin to the next, so only daypacks are necessary when hiking. Evenings will be spent in the rustic but comfortable cabins that offer shared rooms with bunk beds, firewood, solar powered lighting and warm water for showers. All meals will be provided for, leaving your evenings free to enjoy wholesome food, good company, and the wide-open African skies.
Overall itinerary will include the following:
2 nights in Cape Town at one of the fine local B&B’s.
5 nights in De Hoop Nature Reserve
1 night in Hermanus
3 nights back in Cape Town.
Places of interest we will see in Cape Town will include Table Mountain National Park, Robben Island, Simon’s Town to see the jackass penguins, Cape Point and a tour of one of the townships. There will be ample opportunity to enjoy one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
For those interested, this trip can continue on with a 10 night walking safari in South Luangwa National Park.
